How to Prep Walls for Painting
When it comes to ensuring your interior painting project is a roaring success, there is no more important place to begin than making sure your walls are properly prepped, which includes cleaning, sanding, and priming before any painting starts.
Cleaning The Walls
Clean walls are key in preparing a room for painting. While there is no set way to clean walls before painting, most can be washed with a damp sponge. For surfaces that have oil or grime on them, such as kitchen walls, wash them using a solution of water and a grease-cutting detergent, and then use some clean water to remove any residual cleaning agent.
Removing Mildew
No matter which room you are painting, make sure that you address any mold or mildew beforehand. You should never, under any circumstances paint over mildew, as it will just grow through the new paint.
Sanding Surfaces
While sanding is not a requirement for every painting job, any rough spots on walls, whether they are already painted or not, will need to be sanded before you apply any more paint, this will ensure you are left with a perfectly smooth painted surface. Use sandpaper or a sanding block to remove any uneven surfaces, remove the dust with a damp cloth and leave it to dry before you paint them.
Priming The Walls
If paint makes a home, then a primer is its foundation. So make sure that you use a primer to get the most out of your project, more so when your walls are porous or have stains that need to be covered up. Primers can hide imperfections, create a smooth surface that your paint can adhere to, and ensure a uniform finish no matter what you are painting.
